Frank Jiggs Wolford Athletic Award

Every year each Grove City Area School District sport chooses a recipient of the Frank Jiggs Wolford Athletic Award. The award was created in honor of Frank Jiggs, a former student from our High School.

On October 19, 1935 Grove City Area High School hosted rival Sharon High School in football. Less than four minutes into the game, Frank Jiggs Wolford collapsed in front of the goal posts while blocking for a teammate that had intercepted a pass and was running for a touchdown. Frank was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead of a heart attack. The tragedy was announced at half time and the game was discontinued.

A newspaper account stated that Frank Jiggs Wolford was more than a good player. He was a friend of every student in school and contributed as much as he could in the community. He was not a flashy player, but a boy who worked hard every minute, carried out the instructions of his coaches with extreme caution, and sacrificed personal glory to assist a teammate whenever possible.
